GUWAHATI, July 7 – The NIA Special Court here today directed the Guwahati Central Jail authorities to immediately facilitate COVID-19 test for KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi and his associates Dharya Konwar and Bitu Sonowal.
The direction came after Gogoi and his associates reportedly developed symptoms of COVID-19.
Gogoi, who was arrested by Assam Police during the anti-CAA agitation and subsequently by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on charges of sedition, is in judicial custody for over 200 days now.
The court directed the jail authorities to facilitate medical treatment for each one of them and has also asked for a detailed report of their vital health parameters, informed Akhil Gogoi’s counsel Krishna Gogoi.
Advocate Gogoi informed that the health condition of both Akhil Gogoi and Bitu Sonowal were stated to be ‘critical’, so much so that they could not even appear for the court hearing through video conference today.
“Both Akhil and Bitu are suffering from fever, cough and body pain, which are considered as symptoms of COVID-19. Moreover, Dharya too has developed symptoms like fever and headache,” he said.
The court today also heard the prayers for bail of Dharya Konwar and Bitu Sonowal.
