The main and additional buildings of the Meghalaya Secretariat will be sanitized on Saturday and Sunday after six officials tested positive for COVID-19.
“Kindly refrain from unnecessary visits to these two office buildings from next week,” Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said after a review meeting here today.
Some of the employees who tested positive were from the Finance, Law, and Information and Public Relations Departments. The Deputy Chief Minister said extensive testing is on, and that there are various options before the State Government to handle the situation.
Due to the detection of COVID-19 cases, the venue of tomorrow’s Teachers’ Day function organised by the Education Department, has been shifted from the Secretariat to the State Convention Centre.
“From the spike in the positive cases, it appears to be community spread. We, therefore, urge citizens to strictly adhere to the health SOPs and protocols,” the Tynsong said.
The State reported one more COVID-19 death and 108 new cases in the past 24 hours. Health officials stated that 75 patients have recovered during this period.
With the death of a COVID-19 patient at the NEIGRIHMS, the death toll in the State has risen to 14. The active cases in the State have also risen to 1,252, while 1,468 patients have recovered so far.
Of the new cases, East Khasi Hills district reported 43 cases, Ri-Bhoi 27, West Garo Hills 24, West Jaintia Hills six, North Garo Hills two, East Jaintia Hills four and South West Khasi Hills one.
East Khasi Hills has the highest number of positive cases at 842, followed by West Garo Hills (140), East Garo Hills (83), Ri-Bhoi (91) and West Khasi Hills (51).
In the review meeting, it was decided that small business establishments along the national highways will be allowed to open. The Government said these establishments must ensure that all health protocols are strictly adhered to.
