Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today dismissed rumours of any “explosion or crack” in the uranium storage tank in West Khasi Hills district.
Sangma said when the rumours surfaced on the social media, the Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) was immediately informed. The Chief Minister said that the DC and the SP of the district were asked to probe the matter simultaneously.
“The DC and the SP have gone to the site for a survey. The initial report has come in, which states that there is no leakage and no cracks or explosion of any kind have occurred,” Sangma stated.
The UCIL had started uranium exploration works in different parts of West Khasi Hills district several decades back. However, the public sector company was not able to start mining due to pressure from local NGOs here. Later, it closed down its office in the State and abandoned all its works.
