Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today said that students of the State would be taught a skill set in schools and colleges during the course of their education.
Sangma, who was conferred an honorary degree by a private university during a convocation at Noida in Uttar Pradesh, said, “Meghalaya is working to ensure that every youth in the State is trained with one skill set.”
The Chief Minister added: “We have decided to be the first State where every youth is trained in a certain skill. We want our youth to get the opportunity to follow their passion and talent.”
Sangma said that it is important that the youths are shaped as responsible students and citizens while they pursue their education in schools and colleges.
Reiterating the Meghalaya Government’s endeavour to make every citizen and youth productive, the Chief Minister said that the focus is on quality and not quantity. He said that students need to be “honest, fearless and bold” towards achieving their goals.
Sangma praised the Union Ministry of Education for its policy intervention to better the education scenario in the country.
Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank was also present during the convocation of the university. The Union minister said that in the trying times of the pandemic, challenges have turned into opportunities. “This will be possible only when our talented students contribute to the progress of the country. Students will have to contribute significantly to nation building,” he observed.
Pokhriyal said that the association of moral and cultural values with education in educational institutions is very important.
Both Pokhriyal and Sangma also congratulated the varsity students who have passed out. This is a memorable moment in their (students’) lives, they said.
