GUWAHATI: Schools, colleges and other educational institutes in Assam will start functioning normally from January 1, 2021. All the academic restrictions imposed by the state government due to COVID19 protocols will be withdrawn from elementary school to university levels from the inception of the new year, announced Minister for Health and Family Welfare Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday.
The decision to reopen schools and other educational institutes from the new year was taken after reviewing the prevailing COVID-19 situation in the state. The low positivity rate in the state was the reason to lift the restrictions, informed the Minister.
Earlier, the schools from classes 6 to 12 and colleges barring primary schools were reopened in Assam on November 2with all COVID-19 regulations in place. After assessing the situation, the state government decided to reopen elementary schools from January 1 onwards.
The Minister said that the staggered system of attendance of different classes will be withdrawn with regular classes at all levels resuming from the start of the new year. Wearing of masks, use of sanitizers, and social distancing will, however, continue to remain in place, reported PTI.
On the other hand, the hostels of colleges and universities and for residential students of Class 10 and Class 12 will start from December 15. The education department of the state will also issue a fresh Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) in this regard, the minister said.
