The East Garo Hills District Police informed that a rescue team from Rongjeng and Williamnagar Fire and Emergency Services was deployed to the site of the accident.
A night bus of the Meghalaya Transport Corporation (MTC) travelling from Tura to Shillong via Nongstoiñ skidded off the bridge at Nongshram and plunged into the swollen Ringdi river at around 12 am last night.
Reports claim six, including the driver, died in the accident, although only four bodies have been recovered. Sources state that two of the deceased are still trapped in the vehicle. Survivors have been shifted to Rongjeng Primary Health Centre for medical assistance.
Injured victims claim the bus was speeding before the accident, when it collided head-on with the bridge post and plunged into the river. Nearby residents rushed to rescue the victims upon receiving information about the accident.
