Minister for Water Resources, Government of Assam, Pijush Hazarika met Union Minister for Jal Shakti, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat here on Friday and thanked him for releasing Rs.125 crore from the Flood Control Fund to the state for the current fiscal.
Minister Hazarika met Union Minister Shekhawat at his office to express his gratitude for releasing Rs.125 crore from the Central Government’s Flood Control Fund for the current financial year, which had been lying closed since 2016 due to various anomalies between 2011 and 2016.
Hazarika requested Shekhawat to release more funds under the scheme in the coming days for taking up more projects to make Assam flood free.
Earlier, Minister Hazarika presented Union Minister Shekhawat with a gamocha and mementos on behalf of the Government of Assam and the Water Resources Department.
Later, talking to mediapersons, Minister Hazarika said the Central funds which had been discontinued since 2016 due to anomalies committed by the erstwhile government between 2011 and 2016 has been released by the Jal Shakti Ministry one and a half months ago due to the relentless efforts of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma. “Due to the relentless efforts in the last one year, the Central Government has released funds to the tune of Rs.125 crore to the State Water Resources Department,” he added.
The Minister also disclosed to press persons that the state government at the initiative of the Chief Minister is mulling a comprehensive project to reduce water in the rivers during the monsoons by creating ponds nearby.
Hazarika also thanked the Chief Minister for his support and cooperation to enable the Water Resources Department to take up a slew of projects.
