Celebrations began in Majhipara, Beltola in Guwahati on Thursday evening as NDA candidate Draupadi Murmu was elected the next president of India.

A small get-together was organized by All Santal Students’ Union(ASSU) Guwahati Committee to mark the occasion. The event took place at the Majhi Than, located near Beltola College in city. Local residents, ASSU members, and Former Minister of State and MP Prithbi Majhi also joined the celebration.

Terming it historic, Prithbi Majhi said, “It is a proud moment for us. After independence, no Adivasi or Santal became President of India. Draupadi Murmu is the first and has created history by becoming the first Santal/Adivasi President of the country. She also won with majority vote. So, it is really a moment of pride for us.”

“Draupadi Murmu is also an experienced woman as she has served as the governor and  minister earlier. I hope she will work well and my heartiest congratulations and best wishes on behalf of all Santhals and Adivasis of Assam,” Majhi added.

ASSU leader, Motilal Hasda said, “We are extremely happy and that is the reason we have gathered here today. All have come here to celebrate the moment. We never expected a Santhal to be the President of India, but we appreciate government’s decision and we thank our Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji.”
