Discusses evolving landscape of media reporting and its impact on the society.
October 15, 2023; Guwahati: Modern English School, Kahilipara, Guwahati conducted its 1st MEDIA CONCLAVE on 14 October with the aim to explore and discuss the evolving landscape of media reporting and its impact on society. Media personalities of the city discussed on the topic – The Paradigm Shift of Media Reporting. Anirban Roy, Editor in Chief, G Plus; Sushmita Goswami, Senior Correspondent, Press Trust of India; RJ Aaliya, Big FM and Preety Priyadarshinee, NE Correspondent, CNN News 18 participated in the media conclave which was moderated by Mr. Pankaj Das, Director, Modern English School, Guwahati.
Media has always played a pivotal role in shaping public opinion, disseminating information, and influencing societal norms. However, the media landscape is undergoing rapid transformations, which have resulted in significant paradigm shifts in media reporting. Traditional media outlets are now being challenged by new forms of journalism, citizen journalism, and the influence of social media. These changes raise important questions about the ethics, credibility, and responsibility of media organizations.
Editor in Chief at G Plus, Anirban Roy emphasised on how local news cater to the market demand and elaborated on news’ dependence on the region and location of media coverage.
Senior Correspondent at Press Trust of India, Sushmita Goswami talked about essence of news, and how news agencies (wires) collect and select news. She also gave insights on how the news format has changed and thus media reporting over the period of time. She stressed that today any news has to be crossed checked over and over again.
Preety Priyadarshinee, NE Correspondent at CNN News 18 talked about news sensations and selling the news by maintaining qualities of the news. She informed elaborately on how every news has their set target audience. “It is the audience and readers to choose and decide what quality news they will watch, just as it is on the part of every journalist/reporter to choose what kind of news to report”, says Preety.
RJ Aaliya of Big FM gave examples of how radio takes news from authentic local news channels. She said that news is all about giving unbiased information. She also emphasised on how radio is a medium which gives short and quick information. “Use media as medium responsibly”, says Aaliya.
Over 100 students of Modern English School were present and interacted with the eminent media personalities and took their views on various topics like sensationalism in news, freedom of press, nature of news covered by press, etc.
“Discussion from the conclave gave insights on the topic from the experts from different segments of media and entertainment industry.
