Guwahati, August 14:

Students of Cotton University staged a candlelight silent protest in Guwahati on Wednesday evening.

The protest began on the Cotton University campus and continued to the Panbazar area. Many students participated in the protest to show solidarity with the Kolkata trainee doctor’s murder case, demanding justice for the victim.

Junior doctors across the country have already staged protests after the 32-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata while on duty last Thursday.

A student from Cotton University who participated in the candlelight protest said,

“We, the students of Cotton University, have initiated a peaceful candlelight march to honor the memory of Dr. Moumita Debnath, who was a resident doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. She was brutally raped and murdered. We demand justice and that the rapist be hanged.

This is a very sad and brutal case, as it goes beyond mere rape and murder, crossing all limits of humanity. We all know that girls face many struggles in life. The only way out for us is to become someone significant, someone professional. She was a doctor. The question is, if doctors in this country are not safe, then who is?,” she added.
