Guwahati Faces Severe Waterlogging After Heavy Rainfall

Guwahati, August 5: The city experienced nearly two hours of continuous rainfall on the evening of August 5, leading to severe waterlogging issues. The downpour exacerbated traffic congestion and posed significant challenges for local shopkeepers, adversely impacting their businesses.

This recurring issue in Lakhtokia, Guwahati, sees heavy rains often resulting in artificial floods and waterlogging problems, further aggravated by the city’s inadequate road infrastructure.

Reflecting on the recent rainfall, a distressed shopkeeper shared, “Due to continuous rain over the past five days, I have incurred losses amounting to approximately ₹20,000. Water nearly inundated my store, forcing me to contemplate closing down temporarily.”

In contrast, the Darandha area in Sixmile, previously considered a flood-free zone by locals experienced flooding yesterday. The ground floors of almost every building in the area were submerged for around 5-6 hours.

A local resident remarked, “We have never seen such flooding in this area. It’s shocking, as it only rained for about 30 minutes yesterday, but the water level started rising rapidly. When I went outside to check the main road, I found the water was 2-3 feet deep. It seems like this water came down from the Meghalaya hills and entered Guwahati.”
