Guwahati: In a jailbreak on the night of October 7, five inmates from Morigaon District Jail staged an escape, leaving authorities and citizens questioning the facility’s security protocols. As per reports, the prisoners used lungis, blankets, and bedsheets to scale a 20-foot wall, bringning attention to the vulnerabilities within the prison’s infrastructure.

The escapees, identified as Saifuddin, Jiyarul, Nur Islam, Mafidul, and Abdul Rashid, reportedly used blankets, lungis, and bedsheets to scale the towering walls of the jail.

According to sources, they allegedly broke through the iron rods of their cells. Once outside, they tied the blankets, lungis, and bedsheets together to create a makeshift rope, which they used to scale the imposing 20-foot-high jail walls. The escape is believed to have occurred at night, between midnight and 2 AM.

Local authorities, led by the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Morigaon district, have launched a thorough investigation into the incident. Early findings suggest that negligence on the part of jail officials may have contributed to the escape.

A similar incident occurred earlier this year. On March 18, 2024, Tezpur Central Jail experienced its own crisis when three prisoners—Indajit Mandal, Zeherul Islam, and Thuleshwar Tati—escaped by scaling the jail’s perimeter wall. Indajit Mandal is a native of West Bengal, while Zeherul Islam and Thuleshwar Tati are connected to Thelamara and faced serious charges, including child kidnapping and rape.
