Lekhan Baruah, the former president of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) in Dibrugarh district, has been missing for the past 10 days and is suspected of joining the banned separatist group United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA-I).

Baruah was last reported to be in Rohmoria, located in the Lahowal constituency of Dibrugarh, before his disappearance.

Reports suggest that Baruah may have joined ULFA-I following the discovery of a four-page letter he wrote to his mother. The letter, believed to be a farewell message, hinted at his intentions and provided closure for both his family and local authorities regarding his sudden absence.

Dibrugarh Superintendent of Police Rakesh Reddy stated, “We have received a complaint about his disappearance and have begun our investigation. At this stage, we cannot ascertain anything, as the investigation is still in its early phase.”

Baruah’s political journey has faced challenges; in the 2021 assembly elections, he unsuccessfully contested from the Lahowal constituency as a candidate for the Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP) and later joined the BJP during the parliamentary elections.
