Guwahati, October 7: In a joint operation with the National Investigation Agency (NIA), the Assam Police arrested eight suspected Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terrorists in Goalpara district on October 5. The Assam arrest was a part of the nationwide raids conducted by the NIA which include parts of J&K, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.
Assam, which has earlier seen increased security challenges is now returning to normalcy, after Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma became the Chief Minister. Still Northeast is becoming a hotspot for terrorism, largely due to illegal infiltration by Rohingya and Bangladeshi migrants from Myanmar and Bangladesh.
Assam CM Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday told media outlets that the Assam Police has apprehended 8 persons and handed over them to the NIA.
“Today the NIA has conducted a nationwide operation against Islamic fundamentalists. The Assam Police were also given the responsibility and apprehended eight people and handed them to the NIA,” Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma told ANI.
Dr Sarma further added, “The indigenous people of the state will be forced to live in deep uncertainty after 10 to 15 years from now,”
On the other hand, Nabaneet Mahanta, Superintendent of Police of Goalpara district said to ANI, ” The operation is still continuing in several areas like Krishnai and Agia of Goalpara district in Assam. Few people have also been picked up for interrogation”.
