Assam MLA Viral Audio Highlights Land Dealings, MLA Calls It Manipulative
Guwahati: A controversy has erupted in Assam following the circulation of a purported audio clip allegedly involving Palasbari BJP MLA Hemanga Thakuria, in which he is accused of demanding large sums of money as commission for land-related dealings.
According to allegations being discussed widely on social media and in public discourse, the viral audio clip purportedly contains references to land brokering, with claims that commissions running into several lakhs of rupees were demanded. One specific allegation mentions a demand of ₹8 lakh as commission for one bigha of land. In the clip, the speaker is also heard stating that he intends to remain an MLA for the next 25 years and repeatedly refers to the need for “benefit,” which has raised questions about the role of an elected representative seeking commissions.
Critics argue that the core concern is not merely the allegation of commission-taking, but the seriousness of an MLA allegedly being involved in such demands, which, if proven, would amount to an abuse of public office.
Responding to the controversy, Hemanga Thakuria addressed the media through a press conference, rejecting the allegations and terming the audio clip as manipulated and part of a targeted attack against him. He stated that his development work in the Palasbari constituency, including the construction of new roads and future plans such as the establishment of an Indian Institute of Management (IIM), has made him a target.
Refuting the claims made in the viral clip, Thakuria questioned the authenticity of the recording, pointing out inconsistencies. “The audio talks about 300 bighas of land. Where is such land available in Palasbari?” he asked, asserting that the clip had been doctored to malign his image.
Despite the denial, the viral audio has triggered widespread debate and concern, with demands from various quarters for clarity and transparency. The matter continues to draw attention as discussions around the authenticity of the recording and the allegations remain ongoing.
