Jharkhand Exam Row: 110 ABVP Workers Detained During March to Assembly

Ranchi: Around 110 workers of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) were detained in Ranchi on Tuesday while marching towards the Jharkhand Assembly in protest against police action during the ongoing student movement over alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations.

The ABVP had organised the solidarity march to express support for students who were allegedly subjected to police action during protests over the recruitment exam controversy. The demonstration soon led to a confrontation between protesters and police.

Clashes break out during protest

Tensions escalated after police detained the protesters and attempted to move them away from the protest site in buses.

According to reports, ABVP workers resisted the police action and blocked the vehicle carrying the detained protesters. Some demonstrators reportedly lay down in front of the police vehicle, while others climbed onto it, leading to further clashes.

The protest was linked to the wider student agitation over alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations conducted in Jharkhand. Students and aspirants have been demanding greater transparency and an independent probe into the allegations.

Student protests continue

The latest demonstration comes a day after a large student protest in Ranchi escalated near the state Assembly. Police used measures including tear gas and water cannons to disperse protesters as tensions rose around the barricades.

The recruitment examination controversy has triggered sustained protests in the state, with student groups demanding an investigation into alleged irregularities and calling for accountability in the recruitment process.

The political fallout has also intensified, with opposition parties backing demands for a probe while the Jharkhand government has urged protesters to engage in dialogue.

Assembly session adjourned

The protests also disrupted proceedings of the Jharkhand Assembly. According to reports, the House was adjourned sine die a day ahead of its scheduled conclusion amid the escalating situation.

The detention of the ABVP workers is likely to further intensify the ongoing confrontation between student groups and the state authorities over the recruitment examination issue.
