The Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chhatra Parishad (AJYCP) has announced staging a complete blockade of Lower Subansiri Hydro Electric Power Project construction material from October 17 onwards till all the security concerns of the people are addressed properly and the expert committee report is made public.

AJYCP activists present in different locations would stage the blockades tomorrow at different locations from Tezpur to the NHPC project site.
The youth body, which has been protesting the construction of big dam, today said that resuming the NHPC’ 2000 MW power project sidelining all the concerns of the downstream people and the social organisations of Assam is not acceptable at all and it is a question of life and livelihood for the downstream people.

“At a time, people of north Assam are protesting against any mega dam, the NHPC has resumed the work ignoring the judicial instructions and public concerns. The BJP which came to power opposing the Mega dams took a complete U-turn over the issue now becoming the biggest supporter of the Lower Subansiri. The NHPC’s decision to resume work was taken under complete patronage of the Union government. The decision of the tripartite talk between the government, NHPC and protesting organisations was also ignored conveniently,” said AJYCP general secretary Palash Changmai.

The youth body also mentioned that its activist present in different location, including Biswanath, Lakhimpur, Gogamukh, Tezpur and other areas, would not allow the NHPC vehicles to move.
