The Gauhati University cultural team was declared the second best among 98 universities in the All India Inter University National Youth Festival organised from February 3 to 7 by Amity University under the aegis of the Association of Indian Universities.
This is for the first time that Gauhati University has come second in the youth festival.
Among the 12 different prizes, the second best team award was achieved by the Fine Arts team comprising Surya Kumar Saikia, Nipamoni Deka, Saurav Saha and Gyan Pratim Deva Sarma. They won the silver medal in the installation competition. Surya Kumar Saikia won the gold medal in collage and poster-making and the silver medal in on-the-spot painting competition. Gyan Pratim Deva Sarma won silver in cartooning, while Debarathi Saha won the gold in classical dance and Priyanku Pratim Bora won bronze in classical instrumental solo (non-percussion) competition, Director of Students’ Welfare Dr Ranjan Kumar Kakati stated in a press release.
The Gauhati University team also won the gold medal in folk orchestra, silver in cultural rally, and bronze in group song competition. The contingent was led by Ashwini Kumar Deka and Kuldeep Patgiri and the team included music secretary Silpika Madhukulya, Post Graduate Students’ Union cultural secretary Saurav Saha.
The other members of the team were Jyotishman Moran, Nipu Bhuyan, Himangshu Talukdar, Karishma Devi, Anju Hazarika, Nilangana Bora, Baishali Chamua, Rinku Das, Rubul Kalita, Jyotishmoy Deoraja, Bhupal Sarma, Arunima Choudhury, Sweety Konwar, Papori Devi, Kangkon Talukdar, Manoj Sarma, Arup Kalita, Champok Bordoloi, Ishanu Sarma, Suman Das and Prantik Phukan.
GU Vice Chancellor Prof Pratap Jyoti Handique, Registrar Dr HK Nath, Secretary University Classes Prof Dilip Bora, Director Students’ Welfare Dr Ranjan Kumar Kakati congratulated the GU cultural team for bringing glory and achievement to the university for the first time since inception of the youth festival in 1985. The GU team had won the best university award in the East Zone Inter University Youth Festival this year.
Meanwhile, Cotton University won the overall champion title in the literary category. The university contingent won gold in quiz and bronze in folk orchestra and folk dance. The university was also adjudged the second runner-up in the prestigious cultural procession event.
