The State Government today relaxed reopening of religious places only to solemnise marriage ceremonies, though such occasions must first be approved by the respective deputy commissioners.
This decision was taken after a review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma here. In the meeting, several petitions from religious leaders of the State to allow solemnisation of marriages in places of worship was discussed.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tysnong said after thorough consultation it was decided that relaxation would be extended for such ceremonies.
However, anyone who wishes to conduct such ceremonies in places of worship would first have to apply to the respective deputy commissioners and once approval is received, then they can go ahead with the marriage ceremonies.
However, the places of worship would continue to remain closed for all other purposes, Tynsong added.
The State Government first gave its go ahead to reopen places of worship on June 9, though the decision was subsequently set aside.
The other decision taken today is to see whether hotels, restaurants, homestays and tourists spots could be reopened pending an assessment by the deputy commissioners.
Tynsong said that the DCs would have wide ranging consultations with the concerned departments and the stakeholders that includes the hoteliers, restaurateurs and people right up to the village level.
Based on the feedback, the DCs would report to the State Government and only thereafter a decision would be taken.
