GUWAHATI: CBI has arrested a 1985-batch officer of the Indian Railways for accepting a bribe of Rs 1 crore, sources told India Today. This is the most significant bribe the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has ever apprehended a government officer with.
The officer in question has been identified as one Mahendra Singh Chauhan, a senior Indian Railways officer of the 1985 batch. Chauhan has been taken into custody by the CBI for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 1 crore in exchange for favouring a private company with respect to contracts handed out by the North Eastern Frontier Railway.
In fact, the CBI has also arrested two others who were caught accepting the bribe on behalf of Mahendra Singh Chauhan.
The Central Bureau of Investigation is conducting searches at over 20 locations across five states in connection with this case of bribery.
Sources within the CBI told India Today that a trap was set up laid for Mahendra Singh Chauhan after the apex investigative body received reliable information that he had demanded a bribe of Rs 1 crore. Chauhan had promised the private company work contracted by the North Eastern Railway in return.
Sleuths managed to arrest two of Chauhan’s associates as they were caught red-handed accepting the bribe. The CBI suspects that Mahendra Singh Chauhan could have demanded and received bribes on previous occasions as well.
A team of CBI officers on Sunday raided the residence of a Railways employee of the 1985 batch in Dehradun.
