Sofia (Bulgaria): On Friday, Semma Bisla Qualifies for the Tokyo Olympics. She has reached the final of the 50kg competition. However, Sumit Malik settled for a silver after conceding his final bout due to a knee injury at the World Olympic Qualifiers.
Seema reserved an Olympic place for herself after a close 2-1 win over European Championship bronze medallist Anna Lukasiak of Poland, showing great defensive skills in the semi-final.
After carrying away a point on passivity, Seema dragged off a quick takedown in the first season for a 2-1 lead, which she endured till the end to secure the quota.
She will soon compete for gold facing Ecuador’s Lucia Yamileth Yepez Guzman on Saturday. The 29-year-old is the fourth Indian to qualify for the Games after noted Vinesh Phogat (53kg), Anshu Malik (57kg), and Sonam Malik (62kg).
It will be the first time that four Indian women wrestlers will compete in the Olympics. In the 2106 account, three Indian women wrestlers had competed.
Union Minister for youth affairs and sports, Kiren Rijiju while congratulating Seema on Twitter wrote, “I extend my hearty congratulations to wrestler #SeemaBisla who has qualified for Tokyo Olympic at the World Olympic Qualifier in Bulgaria. She is the 8th Indian wrestler to qualify for Tokyo. I am very proud of all our athletes for working hard to secure quotas for the Olympics.”
