North Eastern Handicrafts & Handloom Development Corporation Ltd (NEHHDC) is a Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, Govt of India. It is an Apex body with a mandate to develop and promote North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms. The Corporation has been spearheading various activities which relate to development, production, promotion and marketing viz., training and design development, skill up gradation, capacity building, awareness generation amongst artisans and weavers, marketing and exports.

It has its own chain of retail outlets by the Brand name “Purbashree”, which is a one stop shop for various handloom and handicraft products of North East India covering all eight states namely Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura. The organisation sources handicrafts and handlooms products from the artisans and weavers across the region and retails the same through its chain of emporiums located at Shillong, Guwahati, Kaziranga, Delhi, Kevadia (Gujarat) and now in Kolkata.

Brig. R K Singh (Retd.) Managing Director of North Eastern Handicrafts and Handloom Development Corporation Ltd., while interacting with the media said, “It gives me immense pleasure to inform you that today we are here to reopen our showroom and return to the beautiful city of Kolkata (The City of Joy), as part of the ongoing Azadi Ka Amrit Mahaotsav. We are attempting to showcase the rich heritage & culture of the various states of North East India. We have on offer an exotic range of handicraft and handloom items which have been hand-crafted and weaved by the skilful artisans which will now be available for sale at our Purbashree Emporium, Dakshinapan Shopping Complex 2, Dhakuria, Gariahat Road South, Kolkata.

In addition to this we will like to use this showroom to promote ‘Craft Tourism’ in the NE region and thus urge the nature loving people of Kolkata & West Bengal to please come and explore the untapped treasures of North East. We also have a new tag line for that…Desh apnadekho, Gao apnedekho, Hastkala unkidekho. We don’t just want you to see North East but also to feel it.
