As part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, a cleanliness drive (shramdaan) was held at the Deepor Beel, a Ramsar site on the outskirts of Guwahati on Tuesday.
Minister for Environment and Forest, Parimal Suklabaidya led from the front in the cleanliness of water hyacinth from the water of Deepor Beel.
At a function held at the Tower Camp, Minister Suklabaidya called for conservation of the wetland and to keep the water free from pollution. He said the beel is a haven for migratory birds and fish and is a picturesque site.
Suklabaidya urged everyone to keep Deepor Beel free from pollution and encroachment. He administered the pledge to school students to work for conservation of wetlands and biodiversity of the state.
Padmashri Kushal Konwar Sarma and Hargila Baideu, Dr.Purnima Devi Barman held an interactive talk.
A birding event was held at the Tower Camp. It also celebrated wetland ambassador of Deepor Beel – the Greater Adjutant Stork and Elephant.
PCCF and HoFF, Alka Bhargava, PCCF (Wildlife) Amit Sahai, senior officials of the Forest department and noted conservationists were present on the occasion.
