The Prabhat Tea Estate labourers staged a two-hour protest in front of the tea estate office in Doom Dooma in Tinsukia district, of Assam, in collaboration with the Rupai Saiding Committee and the All-Assam Tea Students Association (AATSA) on Thursday.

Daily wage workers and students who were protesting requested the government to fulfil their fundamental needs.

The workers demanded that their daily salaries be increased to Rs 351, that permanent housing be built, that damaged tea garden roads be repaired, that educated jobless tea garden youths be engaged, and that other tea garden issues be addressed.

Following the protest, the AATSA presented the tea garden authorities with a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

Meanwhile, one of AATSA’s members said, “Rs 205 per day is really low. Despite numerous demands from labourers for a raise in daily earnings to Rs 351, no action has been made to yet.”

“We also demand that other people’s needs, such as power, excellent roads, good dwellings, and water facilities, be met as quickly as possible,” he added.

The AATSA further stated that if the government fails to meet the workers’ requests, they will resort to more violent agitation in the future.
