Air India Bids Farewell to Imphal International Airport, Ending a Historic Chapter

Imphal, June 16, 2025 — A significant era in Manipur’s aviation history came to a heartfelt close as Air India officially ceased its services at Imphal International Airport, also known as Bir Tikendrajit International Airport. The national carrier’s departure marked the end of decades-long operations that had become deeply woven into the region’s air connectivity narrative.

The final departure of the Air India aircraft was an emotional moment for the airport staff and aviation personnel. A series of evocative images circulated by airport authorities captured tearful farewells, with ground staff waving emotionally as the aircraft made its final taxi. One particular photograph, showing an employee overcome with emotion, has resonated widely, symbolizing the deep-rooted connection between the airline and the people of Manipur.

In a symbolic gesture, the departing aircraft—endearingly referred to by airport staff as the “Big Brother”—was seen pausing its gaze towards the new terminal and Air Traffic Services tower, as if offering a final nod to the future of aviation in the state. Nearby, an Air India Express aircraft—seen as the “younger sibling”—stood witness to the farewell, ready to carry forward the airline’s legacy in a new form.

Contrary to speculation, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) clarified that the move was not influenced by recent aviation incidents or operational setbacks. Rather, it forms part of a strategic network rationalization plan by Air India, aimed at optimizing routes and enhancing fleet efficiency.

Going forward, Air India Express will take over select routes from Imphal, with services to be introduced gradually based on demand. Known for its budget-friendly operations and focus on tier-2 and tier-3 cities, the low-cost arm of Air India is expected to continue connecting the region to key destinations.

The airport authority encapsulated the sentiment in a social media tribute:

> “Farewell to a Legacy: Final Moments of Air India at Imphal International Airport. These poignant final moments capture the heartfelt farewell as the ‘Big Brother’ bid adieu… With a legacy rooted in reliability, resilience and a deep connection with the people of Manipur…”

This transition signifies more than just a shift in airline operations—it marks the end of a legacy and the beginning of a new phase in Imphal’s aviation journey. While the departure of Air India leaves behind nostalgia, it also opens the runway to new opportunities and continued service through its successor.
