Alcohol in Meghalaya gets costlier

Meghalaya cabinet on Wednesday hiked taxes on Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL) by 1-9 percent, which will inflate the price of alcohol in the state.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma informed his Twitter followers on Wednesday that the cabinet has decided to increase taxes on ‘few’ IMFL brands to increase revenue in the state.

He wrote, “Cabinet has approved the recategorization of the category of brands for Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL). Due to change of rates in other neighboring states & to ensure more revenue for the State, we have declassified different brands & increased the rates on few of them.”

“Through this decision, the State will earn an additional 25+ Crore additional revenue,” he added.
