Assam CM Acts Like ‘Raja’, Will End Up in Jail for Corruption: Rahul Gandhi

CHHAYGAON, July 16 — In a charged address to Congress workers at Bongaon under the Boko-Chhaygaon constituency, Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, launched a blistering attack on Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma — accusing him of behaving like a monarch and warning that the Congress “tigers” would one day send him to jail for corruption.

Gandhi alleged that Sarma was systematically misusing state machinery to serve corporate interests. “This CM doesn’t see himself as an elected representative but as the king of Assam. He spends every waking moment handing over your land and wealth to people like Ambani and Adani,” he said.

He further claimed that Sarma is visibly rattled by the rising momentum of the Congress party in the state. “Just listen to him on television — his voice trembles with fear. He knows his time is up. No one — not even Modi or Amit Shah — will be able to shield him when the law catches up.”

Gandhi also took aim at the media, alleging complicity in shielding those in power. “The media no longer tells the truth. They’re busy glorifying Adani, Ambani, the CM, Modi, and Shah. But the truth can’t be hidden for long.”

He expressed confidence that this narrative control wouldn’t prevent a Congress resurgence in Assam. “The Assembly elections are around the corner — and Congress will sweep them.”

Framing the broader national context, Gandhi said, “This is a battle of ideologies — the RSS’s politics of hate and violence versus the Congress’s path of truth and non-violence.”

He painted a stark picture of inequality, stating, “There are now two Hindustans — one of billionaires hosting extravagant weddings, and the other of common people crushed by taxes and inflation.”

The Congress leader was in Assam to galvanize party workers ahead of next year’s Assembly polls and voiced optimism over the party’s renewed vigour in the state. “The people of Assam know what’s happening. Under the leadership of Gaurav Gogoi, a new, dynamic team has been formed — and the people will soon witness change.”

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma responded sharply to the allegations, citing Gandhi’s own legal predicaments. Sharing a quote from Gandhi’s closed-door interaction with the Congress Political Affairs Committee, Sarma posted on X (formerly Twitter): “Take it in writing, Himanta Biswa Sarma will definitely be sent to jail — these were Rahul Gandhi’s exact words.”

He added, “Rahul came to Assam just to hurl these accusations, forgetting that he himself is out on bail in multiple criminal cases. My best wishes to him — let him enjoy Assam’s hospitality for the day.”

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also accompanied Gandhi on the day-long visit, which included strategic meetings with MPs, MLAs, district leaders, and office bearers — held first at a hotel near Guwahati airport and later in Chhaygaon, about 40 km away.

APCC President Gaurav Gogoi, who recently assumed leadership of the state unit, said after the morning session, “Together with the PCC team, MPs, MLAs, and district heads, we deliberated on strengthening the party and tackling the road ahead.”

Alongside political discussions, Gandhi and Kharge also held engagements with tribal representatives and individuals reportedly facing displacement and persecution. These interactions were held at the same hotel near the airport.

This marks the Congress leadership’s first major visit to Assam since Gogoi’s appointment as APCC chief. Gandhi and Kharge were welcomed with traditional Assamese gamosas upon arrival at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport and were scheduled to return the same evening.
