Assam exports first consignment of agarwood chips to Saudi Arabia, UAE

GUWAHATI, May 14: Assam has exported its first-ever consignment of agarwood chips, valued at Rs 2.35 crore, to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, officials confirmed.

Agarwood—popularly known as Oud—is considered among the world’s most prized aromatic raw materials and is extensively used in premium perfumes, incense, cosmetics, and traditional products across the Gulf region, Europe, and Southeast Asia.

According to a statement issued by the All Assam Agarwood Planters and Traders Association, the export represents a major breakthrough for Assam’s agro-forest economy, as it is the first legally authorised export of agarwood chips from the state.

The association said the development is expected to pave the way for significant growth in the sector, which has strong global demand and promising revenue potential.

The consignment included 100 kg of agarwood chips shipped to Saudi Arabia and 12 kg dispatched to the UAE. It was sent from the cargo terminal of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport on Wednesday.

Officials stated that the export was completed after obtaining all mandatory statutory approvals.

“This achievement is the outcome of years of research, policy efforts, farmer participation, plantation expansion, processing innovation, and strict adherence to international compliance standards,” said Jehirul Islam, chairman of the association.

Officials further noted that Assam-grown agarwood is widely recognised for its superior quality, rich fragrance, and high oil content, placing the state in a favourable position in global markets.
