Assam Police Jawan Accused of Attempting to Rape Minor in Kamrup District
An Assam Police Battalion jawan has been charged with trying to rape a minor girl in Bagta village, which falls under Hajo in Assam’s Kamrup district. The presence of police personnel in such a serious accusation has triggered indignation and unrest amongst the locals.
The accused person is Abani Kalita, a two-time father and an officer serving with the Assam Police Battalion. The victim was reportedly in the area, alone near her grandmother’s residence, when Kalita allegedly came near her and attempted to pursue his sexual desires. Kalita reportedly forcibly attempted to assault the minor, seizing the opportunity when she was isolated. The minor has been left highly traumatised by the alleged act.
The matter turned more serious when the family of the victim also accused Kalita’s wife of physically and verbally assaulting them after they protested against the incident. According to them, not only did she abuse them but also threatened to do worse to them in a clear bid to protect her husband from prosecution.
Following the attack, the victim’s mother filed a formal FIR with the Hajo Police Station, officially opening the legal case. The case then gained the focus of local right-wing groups, such as the Hindu Jagaran Manch and Bajrang Dal, which have provided assistance to the family and called for a fair and speedy investigation.
The local people have also supported the family, demanding stringent action against the accused and that justice not be delayed or denied. Authorities have asserted that an investigation was indeed being carried out.
