BJP Assam Dispatches Rs 16 Crore Worth of Flood Relief Materials to Upper Assam

Guwahati, July 29, 2026: Upholding its guiding principle of Service to Society, the Bharatiya Janata Party, Assam Pradesh, has launched a large-scale flood relief campaign from today. The unprecedented and unexpected floods triggered by heavy rainfall in Nagaland on July 19 severely affected several areas of Jorhat, Sivasagar, and Charaideo districts in Upper Assam. The disaster claimed several lives, devastated thousands of homes, and affected nearly 11 lakh people across 2,101 villages. The people of these districts had never witnessed such an extraordinary calamity before. Since the onset of the floods, BJP workers have remained on the ground, extending all possible assistance to the affected people. Both the party and the government have undertaken various measures to restore normalcy at the earliest.

Today, a BJP delegation departed from the party’s state headquarters, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan, carrying flood relief materials worth Rs 16 crore collected through contributions from party workers for the flood-affected people of Charaideo and Sivasagar districts. In addition to these two districts, the Assam BJP will also provide relief materials to the flood-affected people of Jorhat and Golaghat districts. Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma flagged off the relief consignment from Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan in the presence of BJP Assam President Dilip Saikia, several ministers of the Assam Government, BJP MLAs, and party workers. The relief materials include 1.8 lakh mekhela chadors, 1.8 lakh children’s T-shirts, and 1.5 lakh mosquito nets. Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the disaster in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, and Golaghat districts has pushed thousands of families into immense hardship, creating uncertainty about both their present and future. He expressed gratitude to various organisations, NGOs, and individuals across Assam who have come forward to support the flood victims through different forms of assistance.

The Chief Minister also highlighted the relief measures announced yesterday through social media for the flood-affected people. These include: ₹4 lakh government ex gratia for the next of kin of those who lost their lives in the floods, along with an additional ₹5 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, taking the total compensation to ₹9 lakh. Similar financial assistance to the families of those currently missing after one month, if they remain untraced. Early disbursal of the Orunodoi benefit on August 1 instead of August 3, with a special assistance of ₹2,500 for flood-affected beneficiary families. Free distribution of textbooks to students. Financial assistance of ₹1,000 for Higher Secondary students, ₹3,000 for undergraduate students, and ₹5,000 for postgraduate students. Free school uniforms for affected students. Free re-issuance of academic documents lost in the floods. Immediate financial assistance of ₹17,500 and an additional ₹15,000 per affected family for people in the four flood-affected districts. The Chief Minister further informed that, following the directions of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Union Finance Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman, he will hold a meeting tomorrow with representatives of all banks operating in Assam to discuss special support measures for loans availed by flood-affected citizens. He also stated that the flood relief fund has been mobilised entirely through voluntary contributions made by BJP party workers. Assam BJP President Sri Dilip Saikia thanked Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma for the prompt and proactive measures taken by the government during this crisis. He also expressed gratitude to every BJP worker who has been actively involved since the first day of the disaster in rescue operations, relief distribution, and other humanitarian efforts. He appealed to all party workers to continue standing firmly with the affected people until normalcy is fully restored.
