Checkmate to Champions! Over 170 Students Battle Minds at the 2nd MES Inter-School Chess Championship 2025
Guwahati, 9 June 2025: Modern English School, Kahilipara, turned into a battleground of minds on 7th and 8th June as it hosted the 2nd MES Inter-School Chess Championship 2025, under the aegis of the Modern Chess Academy. The event witnessed an impressive participation of over 170 young chess enthusiasts from 25 schools across Guwahati, competing for the top honours in a thrilling two-day tournament.

Organised as part of the Modern School of Languages, Sports, and Performing Arts, the championship aimed to sharpen strategic thinking, enhance mental agility, and promote a sporting spirit among students. Players were divided into four groups — Pawn (Up to Class I), Bishop (Classes II-V), Knight (Classes VI-VIII), and Queen (Classes IX-XII) — with separate categories for boys and girls, making the event inclusive and competitive across age levels.
The tournament was judged by an esteemed panel including Chief Arbiter, Mr. Arun Singh, Arbiter- Mr. Golap Chandra Gogoi, Mr. Rajnish Barma, and Mr. Prayag Hazarika. A total of 42 winners were felicitated with trophies and certificates.
Mrs. Jonali Das, Principal of Modern English School, said, “We are proud to host an event that celebrates intellect, discipline, and strategic excellence. The passion and poise shown by the participants were commendable, and we hope this initiative becomes a cornerstone for nurturing sporting intellect in Assam.”
Chess Coach Mr. Bipin Sinha added, “This tournament is a step towards making chess mainstream in schools. The enthusiasm and potential we witnessed here reaffirm our belief in the game’s value in shaping future leaders.”
Delhi Public School, Guwahati, emerged as the Best School with a stellar 26.5 points, followed by Royal Global School with 18.5 points.
