Child Abduction Attempt Foiled Near Guwahati School, Accused Detained
Guwahati, June 9: A suspected child abduction attempt near a school in Guwahati’s Ulubari area on Tuesday triggered panic among residents and prompted swift police action after alert locals intervened and rescued the child.
According to reports, the victim is a 10-year-old Class IV student of DAV Higher Secondary School, Ulubari. The accused allegedly approached the boy near the school premises and attempted to lure him by offering chocolates.
Sources said the man initially tried to persuade the child to accompany him to another location. When the boy refused, the accused allegedly began chasing him in an apparent attempt to forcibly take him away.
The accused has been identified as Pradip Das, a resident of Barpeta district. Local residents claimed that he was disguised as a beggar and was frequently seen staying along the footpath in the area. They further alleged that despite presenting himself as a beggar, the man appeared physically fit and active.
According to reports, the child managed to break free while the accused was allegedly attempting to take him away. Even after the boy escaped, the man reportedly continued chasing him through the locality.
The incident came to light near B. Barooah College, where vigilant locals noticed the suspicious behaviour and immediately intervened. Their timely action helped rescue the child before any harm could occur.
Residents promptly informed Paltan Bazar Police about the incident. Police personnel soon arrived at the scene and detained the accused for questioning.
The child has been identified as the son of Ashok Basfor and Hemanti Basfor of Chatribari. Following the incident, his parents reached the spot and safely took him home.
Meanwhile, the victim’s family has lodged a First Information Report (FIR) at Paltan Bazar Police Station. Police have launched an investigation into the matter and are examining the circumstances surrounding the alleged abduction attempt.
Authorities are expected to gather further details as the investigation progresses.
