Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday campaigned in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong for the June 8 KAAC elections.

Interacting with media persons while campaigning for the BJP candidate of Lumbajong, Johny Timung in Diphu, Himanta said, “There is a common consensus that Tuliram Ronghang has done a good job in the last five years. The next chief executive member will be finalised by the party but I am sure the people of Karbi Anglong will want him.”

He further said, “I am winding up my campaign today and my cabinet colleagues will stay back.”

He attended a public meeting at the Diphu Government Boys HS School playground here.

Sarma further attended campaign meetings in Bithung Rengthama constituency, West Karbi Anglong for Tuliram Ronghang, Mangal Sing Timung (Hamren MAC constituency) and Longbison Bey (Rongkhang MAC constituency) at Dongkamukam Waisong Stadium.

He said, “Development cannot be denied due to your enormous love and support. Roads, hospitals, mobile towers, schools, colleges, engineering college, Law College, university, etc., will be built here within a short time.”

In his speech, the CEM opined that Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong are cosmopolitan in nature as Karbis, Assamese, Garo, Dimasa, Tiwa, Hindi Bhasi, Bodo and Bengali are domicile here.

MP Horensing Bey in his speech said All Party Hills Leaders Conference led by JI Kathar, Congress, CPI (ML), Autonomous State Demand Committee, etc., will bite the dust in this election.

Election rally was also attended by ministers Naba Kumar Doley, Pijush Hazarika, MLA Rupsing Teron and others.

The CM campaigned for 12 Phuloni MAC constituency’s BJP candidate Kangbura Killing at Tarabasa Playground. He also attended a public meeting at Deithor Sports Complex in Deithor, Duar Bagori MAC constituency for BJP candidate Richard Tokbi.

Meanwhile, Congress candidate of Rongkhang MAC constituency, Sing Teron attending a public meeting at Borthol attacked MP Horensing Bey for not raising the issue of implementation of Article 244 A in the Parliament.

Teron said, “Rajdhani Express Train from Dibrugarh to New Delhi used to have a halt at Diphu for two minutes before the pandemic, but due to pandemic it was suspended on a few occasions. Instead of raising the issue of the Autonomous State for us, he is asking for a halt in Diphu for Rajdhani Express in Parliament which is ridiculous.”

In the meantime, All Party Hills Leaders Conference (APHLC) booth committee offices of Bordongka and Rongkimi both under Bithung Rengthama MAC constituency were vandalised by miscreants on Friday night.

An FIR was lodged in Dongkamukam police outpost by Bikram Hanse, APHLC’s candidate.

The Deputy Speaker and MLA of Bokajan, Dr Numal Momin campaigned in Nilip for BJP candidate Pobitra Rongpi on Saturday.

In the meeting, BJP candidate Pobitra Rongpi highlighted the development schemes implemented in the Nilip area.

Nilip MAC constituency has one of the highest numbers of candidates with eight in the fray.

The candidates are – sitting MAC Pobitra Rongpi (BJP), Sunil Tokbi (Autonomous State Demand Committee), Semon Engti (Congress), Joysing Teron (CPI (ML)-Hills Party Committee), Eliash Phangcho (AAP), Devinson Bey (Independent) backed by Nilip Marginalised Upliftment Committee, an Independent candidate backed by APHLC, Rajesh Tisso and an Independent candidate backed by Nilip Democratic Forum (NDF) Avinush Ronghang.

NDF backed Independent candidate Avinush Ronghang while criticising the BJP said that the BJP ruled KAAC has done very little for Nilip in the last five years. The constituency is lacking in road communication, school infrastructure and standard of living. Nilip has been deprived of various government welfare schemes.

Another Independent candidate Devinson Bey said other than the road from Silonijan to Sanglanghat, bridges and roads in Nilip are in a pitiable condition. Bey wants development to reach the remotest corner of Nilip.

ASDC candidate Sunil Tokbi said the people of Nilip are now fed up with the BJP.
