AZARA, Aug 6: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday (today) visited the construction site of the new terminal building at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport in Borjhar, to review the ongoing progress of the ambitious infrastructure project.
During the inspection, the delegation was briefed on the architectural highlights, design innovations, and enhanced passenger amenities that the new terminal will offer upon completion.
The upcoming terminal, which is expected to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November this year, is poised to significantly enhance the airport’s passenger handling capacity and strengthen Guwahati’s position as a major air connectivity hub in the Northeast region.
What sets this terminal apart is its unique design, which draws inspiration from traditional Assamese art and culture. The structure prominently features motifs inspired by the ‘koupou’ flower, a symbol often seen in Assamese bamboo crafts. The use of locally sourced bamboo and other eco-friendly materials in the design reflects a commitment to sustainability, while also paying tribute to Assam’s rich cultural heritage.
Speaking to the media during the visit, Chief Minister Sarma expressed satisfaction over the pace of construction and said that the new facility would not only boost regional connectivity but also enhance international linkages.
The Chief Minister was accompanied by a delegation from the neighbouring country of Bhutan
With this strategic expansion, LGBI Airport is expected to play a crucial role in promoting tourism, trade, and cultural exchange across borders while easing congestion at the existing terminal.
