Floods claim 2 rhino calves in Pobitora

English NewsFloods claim 2 rhino calves in Pobitora

Two rhino calves died inside Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in Morigaon district of central Assam due to Brahmaputra-induced floods during the last three days.

According to the Ranger of Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, last Wednesday the Forest Protection Force recovered the carcass of a rhino calf from the flood waters inside the sanctuary. In the wee hours today, the forest guards recovered another rhino calf’s carcass near Amaramul Camp. The cause of the death of both the rhino calves were drowning in the high flood inside the sanctuary, claimed the forest staff.
It may be mentioned here that the entire Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, the densest habitat of one-horned rhinos in the world covering a 46 sq. km area in central Assam was completely submerged by the flood waters of the Brahmaputra.
