Guwahati International Marathon to Debut in February 2027 With ₹1.25 Crore Prize Purse

GUWAHATI: Guwahati is set to host its first International Marathon on February 7, 2027, with around 12,000 participants from India and abroad expected to take part in the inaugural edition.

The event was formally launched in Guwahati in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar. The marathon is being promoted by PMG Sports LLP, with the Assam Tourism Development Corporation serving as the state sponsor.

The event carries a total prize purse of ₹1.25 crore, placing it among the major prize-money road races in the country and expected to attract elite athletes, professional runners, running clubs and fitness enthusiasts.

The marathon will feature five race categories, including the full 42.195-km marathon, a 21.097-km half marathon, 10-km and 5-km runs, as well as a 1.5-km inclusive run.

The flagship marathon is expected to feature leading international and Indian long-distance runners, while the shorter categories are designed to encourage participation from families, young people, amateur runners and fitness enthusiasts.

The race will start and finish at Judges Field. The proposed route will take participants through several prominent parts of Guwahati, including Gauhati University, Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu and the IIT Guwahati area before returning to Judges Field.

The course has been measured according to international standards, with experienced professionals from India and abroad involved in the organisation of the event.

Badminton star PV Sindhu has been named the brand ambassador of the marathon, while Gavaskar has also extended his support to the initiative.

Organisers are positioning the marathon as more than a competitive road race, with a focus on fitness, sports tourism, community participation and showcasing Assam to national and international visitors.

With its international participation and substantial prize purse, the event is expected to give Guwahati a stronger presence on the global sporting calendar and create a new annual sporting tradition for Assam.
