Nepal Boxing Team Trains in Guwahati Ahead of Asian Games

GUWAHATI: The Nepal boxing team is undergoing an extended high-performance training camp at the Sports Authority of India’s National Centre of Excellence in Guwahati ahead of the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.

The seven-member Nepalese contingent, comprising three women and four men along with two coaches, has been training at the SAI centre since August 10. The camp is scheduled to continue until September 15, after which the team will travel to Japan for the continental sporting event beginning September 19.

The training programme is aimed at providing the Nepalese boxers with access to advanced facilities, expert coaching and quality sparring partners as they make their final preparations for the Asian Games.

SAI coaches Narendra Rana, Trideep Borah and Pranamika Borah have been assisting the visiting team during the camp. The arrangement has also allowed the Nepalese boxers to train and spar with Indian athletes.

The Nepal team includes Ramisha Shrestha in the 51kg category, Asmita Duwal in 54kg, Kusum Tamang in 65kg, Chandra Bahadur Thapa in 55kg, Khagendra Roka Magar in 60kg, Dan Bahadur Darlami in 70kg and Rabin Nepal in 90kg.

The camp is being conducted with the Nepal Boxing Federation covering expenses related to international travel, visas, medical insurance and other incidental costs.

The initiative also highlights the role of Guwahati as an important high-performance training destination in the Northeast, with the city’s SAI facilities increasingly being used by athletes preparing for major international competitions.

For the Nepalese boxers, the camp provides an opportunity to sharpen their technical and physical preparation while gaining experience through regular interaction with Indian athletes.

The training exchange also adds a sporting dimension to India-Nepal ties, with both sides using sport as a platform for cooperation and mutual engagement.
