Decks have been cleared for hosting the prestigious and the most glamorous cine award function, the Filmfare Awards in Assam in February 2020. For the first time ever, the gala event will be held out of Mumbai.
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) in this regard will be signed between the Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC) and The Times Group, organisers of the event, within this month. Guwahati is hosting the award show as part of the State government’s initiative to use Bollywood’s influence to promote Assam tourism at the national and international levels.
The event, worth anything between Rs 20 and Rs 30 crore, is likely to be held on February 15.

The initiative comes in the backdrop of the Government of Assam announcing lucrative incentives and cash benefits for Hindi, English and other language films in the State Tourism Policy if such films are shot in Assam. Earlier, actress Priyanka Chopra was roped in as the brand ambassador of Assam Tourism.

In August this year Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had tweeted about exploring the possibility of hosting the Filmfare Awards in Guwahati.

ATDC Managing Director Bhaskar Phukan told The Assam Tribune that the MoU has already been prepared and other practical details are in the process of being finalised with this month. Big open spaces at Sarusajai, Khanapara and Amingaon are vying to host the glittering award night.

“It’s one of the major events in the State tourism’s hectic calendar of events. We are taking all the measures necessary to successfully host the event of such scale having millions of followers globally,” the ATDC MD said.

A lot of thrust is being given to improve the tourism scenario in Assam with the State government recently announcing Rs 300 crore for improving the tourism infrastructure.

It needs mention that there has been a steady growth in the number of tourists visiting the State. During 2018-19, Assam received 60,27,002 domestic and 41,209 foreign tourists. In the year previous to that the number of domestic tourists was 59,34,791, while 31,739 foreign tourists visited Assam.

The Filmfare Awards were first introduced by The Times Group in 1954, the same year the National Film Awards were announced.
