Guwahati youth attacked in Gujarat

GUWAHATI: A youth from Guwahati was attacked by a group of local residents in Guajarat over suspicion of being infected with COVID-19. The youth identified as Sanjay Sarma came under attack in Surat on Friday night.

According to reports, Sanjay was working in a catering firm in Surat. He was living in a rented accommodation in Pandesara area. Sanjay became jobless because of COVID-19 induced lockdown.

The youth along with his friends had recently rented a room in Udhna area at Patelnagar. A day later, the local residents told Sanjay’s friends, not to allow him in their place, suspecting that he may be infected with the virus as Pandesara area has been witnessing high rates of COVID-19 cases.

On Friday night, the three locals asked Sanjay Sarma to vacate the room. This soon turned into a heated argument, following which the three started beating him with wooden sticks.

He was immediately rushed to a private hospital and later shifted to Surat Municipal Institute of Medical Education and Research (SMIMER) hospital for treatment.

A complaint was lodged against the three identified as Deepu, Nepali and Bunny at the Udhna Police station and the investigation is underway.
