India, China Hold First High-Level Military Flag Talks in Arunachal Pradesh Amid LAC Tensions
New Delhi: In a significant step towards strengthening military communication along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), India and China have held their first Senior Highest Military Commander-Level Flag Meetings in the Arunachal Pradesh sector.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the meetings were held in two phases, at Wacha on the Indian side on September 6 and at Damai on the Chinese side on September 7. The dialogue follows a series of diplomatic engagements between the two countries aimed at maintaining peace and stability along the eastern sector of the LAC. (The Times of India)
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the new mechanism was established following understandings reached during the Special Representatives’ talks between National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, along with subsequent meetings under the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC). The high-level military engagement comes amid reports of increased Chinese military activity in parts of Arunachal Pradesh, particularly the Upper Subansiri region. Officials, however, described the talks as an important confidence-building measure aimed at improving communication, reducing misunderstandings, and ensuring peace along the disputed frontier. Until now, Corps Commander-level meetings between the two countries were largely confined to the western sector, particularly the Chushul-Moldo meeting point in eastern Ladakh. The latest dialogue marks the first time such a mechanism has been extended to the eastern sector in Arunachal Pradesh. (The Economic Times)
The development is also being viewed as diplomatically significant as it comes ahead of the upcoming BRICS Summit, where leaders of both countries are expected to meet.
