AssamInternational Day Of Indigenous Peoples Observed In Kokrajhar

Along with the rest of the state, the International Day of Indigenous Peoples was observed in Kokrajhar with a befitting programme scheduled.

The eventwas organised by the All Adivasi Students Association of Assam (AASAA) at Mahatma Gandhi (MG) Park complex in Kokrajhar marking huge participation of people from different places of the Bodoland Territorial Region.

BTC EM Wilson Hasda joined in the event as a guest and spoke on different topics related to the Adivasi and about this year’s theme set by the United Nations which focuses on “The Role of Indigenous Women in the Preservation and Transmission of Traditional Knowledge.”

A rally was also carried out in connection with the observation of the day, which was started from Gaurang bridge to MG Park via DC office Road in support of demanding land pattas and ST status to the Adivasi communities in the state of Assam.

A cultural demonstration programme was also organised to mark the observation.

President of AASAA, Stephen Lakra spoke on the importance of celebrating the day for the rights of the indigenous people.

He said the Adivasi community in Assam despite being Indigenous are deprived of various rights including land rights, and ST status.

The International Day of Indigenous Peoples is celebrated on August 9 every year to raise awareness and protect the rights of the indigenous population of the world. It focuses on the preservation and promotion of indigenous people’s traditional knowledge and practices.
