MAA Demands Apology from Minister Jayant Malla Baruah for Insulting Remarks on Journalists

Guwahati, June 27: The Media Association of Assam (MAA) has issued a sharp condemnation of Cabinet Minister Jayant Malla Baruah’s alleged derogatory comments towards journalists during a recent press conference.

In an official statement released to the media, MAA President Hiren Chandra Kalita and Secretary-General Chandra Kumar Shaikia denounced the minister’s remarks, describing them as deeply disrespectful and unacceptable. The association stated that referring to journalists as “inferior people” is a direct affront to the integrity and dignity of the press.

Calling for an immediate public apology, MAA urged all media professionals to boycott Minister Baruah until he issues a formal retraction of his comments. The association also appealed to all political representatives — including ministers, MLAs, MPs, and government officials — to uphold respect for the journalistic community and refrain from any form of verbal or institutional harassment.

The Media Association further called upon the Chief Minister and concerned authorities to take appropriate action in response to the minister’s statement and ensure accountability in such matters.

The association emphasized that such incidents set a dangerous precedent for freedom of the press and must not be tolerated in a democratic society.
