NEHHDC celebrates the 11th National Handloom Day with grandeur
The North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation Ltd. (NEHHDC), under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER), Government of India, celebrated the 11th National Handloom Day at its Craft Promotion and Experience Centre in Garchuk, Guwahati today.
The event witnessed a vibrant confluence of handloom stakeholders, artisans, awardees, industry leaders, and government dignitaries, coming together to honour the craftsmanship, legacy, and socio-economic importance of handloom in the North Eastern Region (NER).
The event was graced by dignitaries including Shri Bimal Borah, Minister for Industries, Commerce & PE Department, Government of Assam, Shri Mara Kocho, Managing Director, NEHHDC, Shri PVSLN Murty, Chairman and Managing Director, NEDFi, Shri M.C. Omi Ningshen, IRS, Managing Director, NECBDC and Shri Ishwar Chanabasappa Poojar, Director, IIE
Speaking on the occasion Shri Bimal Borah emphasized the government’s resolve to elevate Assam’s handloom industry to global prominence, underscoring the need for innovative marketing, technology adoption, and artisan-centric development models. Handloom is not only an art, it is a pride and identity, the minister said.
Special addresses by senior officials of NEDFi, NECBDC, and IIE highlighted the importance of inter-institutional collaboration in scaling up the regional handloom and handicraft ecosystem.
Guests and attendees were taken on a curated walkthrough of NEHHDC’s exclusive collection of handloom and handicraft products—featuring designs and techniques native to Assam and the broader Northeast region. The showcase reinforced the region’s deep-rooted cultural identity and the richness of its textile legacy.
