One-Day Muga Field Day Programme Held to Promote Scientific Silkworm Rearing

Kokrajhar, July 18: The Central Silk Board, through its Muga Eri Silkworm Seed Organisation, P3 Unit, Kowabil, organized a One-Day Muga Field Day programme at Adabari Village under the Adabari Sericulture Circle, BTC, Kokrajhar (Assam), with the objective of enhancing knowledge and practical skills of local farmers in muga silkworm rearing, host plant cultivation, and field management practices.

The training program was attended by 84 muga farmers from the Adabari Sericulture Circle and 5 officials from the Department of Sericulture (DoS), Adabari.

During the field exposure session, Dr. Suraksha Chanotra, Scientist-B of the Central Silk Board’s P3 Unit, provided hands-on demonstrations and technical insights. She explained scientific pre-brushing care, and emphasized best practices in host plant management, such as pollarding and pruning of Som and Soalu plants—key host species for muga silkworms.

Dr. Chanotra also trained participants on how to identify optimum-quality leaves for brushing muga silkworms and shared vital precautionary measures during rearing, including the use of nets, Uzi traps, and limiting outsider access to reduce disease outbreaks.

The programme helped equip farmers with practical tools and updated techniques essential for sustainable and profitable muga silk production, aligning with the broader goals of the Central Silk Board to strengthen sericulture-based livelihoods in the region.
