Severe Erosion in Chhaygaon: Washed-Away Embankment Sparks Fear Among Villagers
Palasbari, June 3 – Unrelenting rainfall has triggered severe erosion in Paschim Balapara and No. 1 Balasidhi villages under Chhaygaon in Kamrup district, disrupting connectivity and posing a serious threat to public safety. The situation has grown critical as floodwaters have swept away a geo-bag embankment, leaving residents anxious and vulnerable.
Local communities are grappling with collapsing roadways and compromised access to essential services. “We have repeatedly informed the Kamrup District Commissioner, the Circle Officer, our local MLA, and the Flood and River Erosion Management authorities—but no concrete action has been taken,” said a resident of Paschim Balapara, expressing growing frustration over the administration’s inaction.
The erosion has rendered transportation nearly impossible, particularly during emergencies. Residents have been forced to carry patients on foot to the nearest healthcare facility due to the complete breakdown of road access.
As the Kalahi river continues to swell and erode riverbanks at an alarming pace, the failure of the geo-bag embankment—originally constructed as a safeguard against such events—has only deepened concerns. The poorly executed structure was no match for the river’s force, and its collapse has exposed the surrounding areas to heightened risk.
Locals are now urging the district administration to initiate immediate and effective measures to curb the erosion and restore safe connectivity before the situation deteriorates further. The unfolding crisis in Chhaygaon underscores the urgent need for sustainable flood and erosion management strategies in the region.
