Storm damages around 2500 houses in Jorhat dist

Nearly 2500 houses were damaged across Jorhat district in the storm that hit several areas of the district yesterday.

According to a district administration official, as per preliminary reports received in the district headquarters here today about 2500 houses were partially damaged while about 300 were completely damaged by the storm.
The official said that 14 schools and one college, two anganwadi centres and two irrigation schemes were also severely damaged by the high velocity winds. A population of 6456 spread over 74 villages were affected by the storm. The official said that villages under the Jorhat, Titabar and Mariani Revenue Circles were affected due to the storm.

The official stated that a report of the total assesement of damage caused by the storm will be prepared and submitted to Dispur for providing compensation as per rules of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, which is under the Revenue and Disaster Management department of the State Government.

No loss of human lives and wildlife has been reported, the official stated.
