Umrongso Village Appeals for Fair Compensation in Limestone Mining Project
Community submits memorandum to Dima Hasao Autonomous Council highlighting land and livelihood concerns
Haflong, Assam | September 28, 2026 — The residents of Umrongso Village (19 KM) have formally submitted a memorandum to the Chief Executive Member of the Dima Hasao Autonomous Council, Debolal Garlosa, raising urgent concerns over land acquisition and compensation linked to the New Umrongso Limestone Block operated by JK Lakshmi Cement Ltd.
Signed by village leaders Monsing Enghi (Sarkari Gaonbura), Mensing Hanse (President, Village Development Committee), and Joysing Ronghang (Secretary, Village Development Committee), the memorandum outlines key demands:
- Reduction of village land included in the 200-hectare limestone block.
- Payment of land compensation and zirat under the Fair Compensation Act.
- Implementation of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) schemes tailored to the needs of the affected community.
The villagers stressed that while industrial development has contributed to regional growth, their grievances remain unresolved. “Several bighas of land were provided to cement industries and limestone mining, but the concerns of affected villagers were not properly addressed. This is a matter of great concern,” the memorandum states.
Copies of the memorandum have also been forwarded to the District Commissioner of Dima Hasao, the Directorate of Geology and Mining in Guwahati, and the Assam Mineral Development Corporation (AMDC), among others, for necessary action.
The Umrongso Village community expressed hope that the authorities will act swiftly to safeguard their rights, ensure fair compensation, and promote sustainable development in the region.
