Alleged Police Brutality in Assam: Young Entrepreneur Claims Assault in Guwahati
A young businessman was assaulted by a police officer and his team in Panjabari area of Guwahati during the wee hours of Saturday, without any provocation from the businessman’s end as reported.
The entire incident was reportedly captured on CCTV cameras, with allegations specifically raised against Satgaon Police Station officer Jayanta Rajkhowa.
According to the victim, Aman Hazarika, who runs a cafe named Mid Night Cafe in Panjabari, the incident occurred around 2 am after he had closed his cafe for the day. Hazarika said he had called the landlord of the rented premises to lock the gate before leaving for home.
While the two were engaged in a brief conversation outside the property, a police team allegedly arrived at the spot and began clicking photographs of them. Hazarika claimed that when he questioned the reason behind the photographs being taken, he was allegedly assaulted by the police officer.
The young entrepreneur further alleged that the officer, accompanied by a group of policemen, physically assaulted him on the roadside and verbally abused others, including women, who gathered at the spot during the altercation.
Hazarika also accused officer Jayanta Rajkhowa of being under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. He alleged that he was threatened with an “encounter” if he disclosed the matter to anyone.
Hazarika said he was scared and questioned the safety of educated young entrepreneurs in the city if such incidents continue to occur.
“The way I was treated has left me scared. If situations like these continue, how will educated young entrepreneurs survive in the city?” he asked.
The victim has already lodged an FIR at Satgaon Police Station regarding the incident. Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the allegations.
