Curfew extended in Shillong till Aug 18 morning

In view of the prevailing law and order situation, Meghalaya Government has decided to extend the ongoing curfew till 5 AM of Wednesday (August 18) in Shillong and adjoining areas.

The Government has also extended the suspension of mobile internet services by another 24 hours. The curfew was clamped since 8 pm on August 15 while mobile internet services were banned since 6 PM same day.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma informed that five companies of Central Armed Paramilitary Forces of BSF and CRPF are being deployed in the city.

Meanwhile, Meghalaya Government has ordered a judicial inquiry into the death of former HNLC leader, Cheristerfield Thangkhiew who was killed in ‘an encounter’ with police in the wee hours of August 13 last.

Speaking to media persons after today’s Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister said that the Government had also decided to form a peace committee which will be headed by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong. The peace committee will have Cabinet Ministers Hamlet Dohling and Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar besides some civil society representatives.

The Cabinet also decided to constitute a sub-committee for security and law and order, which will be headed by the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister. This committee will look into the different aspects of law and order.
