Guwahati: The foot overbridge at Christian Basti has become a major point of inconvenience for daily commuters as both the escalator and lift remain out of order, forcing pedestrians to depend entirely on stairs.
A notice pasted on the escalator clearly states, “Power Supply is interrupted due to Short Circuit – Sorry for Inconvenience,” indicating a technical fault behind the disruption. Despite this, no immediate repair work appears to be underway, raising concerns among the public.
The lift at the location is also non-functional, worsening the situation for elderly citizens, children, and differently-abled individuals who rely heavily on such facilities.
With both systems down, crossing GS Road—one of Guwahati’s busiest stretches—has become increasingly difficult and risky. Several pedestrians are reportedly avoiding the foot overbridge and attempting to cross the road directly amidst heavy traffic, putting lives at risk.
Locals have expressed anger over the lack of maintenance and delayed response from authorities. Many questioned the purpose of such infrastructure if it fails to function when needed most.
The incident highlights serious gaps in civic upkeep and pedestrian safety, with citizens demanding immediate repair and proper maintenance to restore safe and accessible movement across the road.
